As a parent, your child’s smile is one of the most important things in the world. When tooth decay threatens that smile, dental fillings become a necessary part of protecting your child’s oral health. While it’s completely normal to feel concerned when your child needs a filling, understanding the process and knowing what to expect can ease your mind.
At Fraser Point Dental, we’re here to help you navigate every step of your child’s dental care, including when a filling is needed. In this post, we’ll explain why children might need fillings, the types available, and how you can help prevent cavities in the first place.
Why Do Children Need Dental Fillings?
Children can develop cavities for many of the same reasons adults do—bacteria in the mouth feed on sugars from food and produce acids that erode tooth enamel. Unfortunately, kids are sometimes more vulnerable to cavities because:
- They’re still learning proper brushing and flossing techniques
- They may consume more sugary snacks and drinks
- Their baby teeth have thinner enamel than adult teeth, making decay progress faster
When a cavity forms, a dental filling is needed to remove the decay and restore the tooth. Left untreated, a small cavity can become a larger problem, potentially requiring more invasive procedures like crowns or even extractions.
Are Fillings Safe for Kids?
Yes, dental fillings are safe for children. Pediatric dental care is designed with your child’s comfort and long-term oral health in mind. Our dental team uses materials and techniques that are both effective and child-friendly.
At Fraser Point Dental, we prioritize gentle care and ensure your child feels calm and safe during the procedure. We explain everything in age-appropriate language and take the time to answer your questions as a parent.
Types of Fillings for Children
There are different types of filling materials used in pediatric dentistry. The most common include:
- Composite (Tooth-Colored) Fillings
- Made from a durable resin that blends with the natural tooth color
- Ideal for visible front teeth
- Often preferred for aesthetics
- Amalgam (Silver) Fillings
- Made from a blend of metals, including silver, tin, and mercury
- Very strong and long-lasting
- Typically used for back molars where durability is more important than appearance
Your dentist will help you decide which option is best based on the size of the cavity, the tooth’s location, and your preferences.
What Happens During a Filling Appointment?
A filling appointment for a child is usually quick and straightforward. Here’s what you can expect:
- Numbing the Area: A local anesthetic may be used to ensure your child is comfortable and feels no pain.
- Removing the Decay: The dentist carefully removes the decayed portion of the tooth.
- Placing the Filling: The chosen filling material is placed and shaped to match the natural tooth.
- Polishing: The filling is polished to ensure a smooth and natural feel.
The entire process usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the size and number of cavities.
Tips for Parents: Making the Visit Easier
- Stay Positive: Talk about the dentist in a calm, upbeat way. Avoid words like “pain” or “hurt.”
- Use Books or Videos: Many children’s books and cartoons explain dental visits in a fun way.
- Bring Comfort Items: A favorite toy or stuffed animal can help your child feel more secure.
- Praise and Reward: Celebrate their bravery with praise or a small treat afterward.
At Fraser Point Dental, we specialize in creating a welcoming environment for kids and strive to make every visit a positive experience.
Preventing Cavities in Children
While fillings are safe and effective, prevention is always the goal. Here are a few tips to help reduce your child’s risk of cavities:
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Floss daily (yes, even baby teeth!)
- Limit sugary snacks and drinks
- Schedule regular dental checkups every six months
- Ask your dentist about sealants—a protective coating for molars
